In a world of diplomatic statements and banal refrains on the development of our sport we were able to enjoy an excellent exception to the rule in Brazil's coach Marquinhos Xavier. That's why (but obviously not the only reason) we have been thinking since a while to talk to him regarding several matters. Below you find the result of this "futsal chat". Enjoy!

Let's start from "today" and the near future. How do you evaluate the World Cup draw? With special refer to Brazil's group, which hurdles are you expecting to face? On a general note, do you see an harder group? And do you believe Brazil can be back on top on the worldwide stage?
I believe all groups are quite balanced, worldwide futsal has changed and all teams can get their rivals into troubles. But I rely on our strenght and on our Brazilian National team performance in Lithuania. I know we will face difficulties along the tournament, but through our work I see the chance to overcame them.
Which changes have you experienced following the World Cup postponement, talking about Brazil preparation? Do you rate playing one year later Lithuania as something bad?
This was surely a negative factor for Brazil, as in this whole period we could not set a training stage and the last time we met just for a single friendly game vs Spain, without even having the chance for training sessions. We couldn't therefore evaluate some players who we wanted to test and give more time to other players.
How hard is, in a country like Brazil which keep on being the greatest futsal "players-builder" in the world, choose 14/16 players for the national team?And more: how do you consider your role (and your selection for the task) as head coach of Brazil given the huge amount of great coaches in the country?
Our geography is really challenging, we have a lot of emerging players but they are leaving for other countries sooner and sooner so that the chance to see them in the Brazilian team slips through our fingers: we would definitely have to increase our selection stages. In the end, chosing 16 players in Brazil is a quite complicated task because we know we could set two or even three great teams. So, every coach will always focus towards the direction that best suits with his belief, and that's what I'm doing as well: chosing those players who best adapt to my work methods.
As for the criteria that made me reach the national team, I can say that they were based on technical reasons.
I have a very consolidated job in my country and despite a recent career I was able to work in different structures which allowed me to get ready and mature very early. We have great coaches in Brazil and I'm just temporarily on Brazil bench, representing all of them as well.

Let's talk about recent changes in brazilian futsal, with CBF replacing CBFS in the management of the game and above all taking care of the national teams. I know that is not easy, given your role, providing us with your thoughts... but how do you consider this change? Specifically, what's gonna determine?
I believe that major changes will come just after the World Cup, we're not experiencing any impact yet. Right now few things were changed in order not to change our work dynamics. What I can clearly state is that Brazilian futsal is in need to define its internal roles, increasing our skills in terms of management and organization of the game: people here really need to know the path they should follow.
If these things don't change maybe we can keep winning due to our great technical skill, but we won't change the organizational scenario. I've been trying to contribute so that we don't just get titles, but also to get futsal managed as it really deserves.
What's your opinion about the "oriundi" (naturalized players) matter, with special refer to many national teams in Europe? Isn't it a big mistake of the FAs, which thus kill the formation of local athletes to achieve faster results? What's then the meaning of playing a challenge for national teams if many actually compete with the product of a single country, Brazil? And, always linked to this, it seems incredible to me that, many times, a country like Brazil which is the true cradle of futsal is not recognized as such (with regard to the local leagues, players, coaches). Maybe because other countries work better in "selling" the product?
No doubts, this topic is a very important topic in worldwide futsal. I often realize with a certain sadness that some countries ignore their own athletes and try to win with players coming from abroad. I don't think this is a productive process. Regarding the "image" issue, there is no doubt that some countries sell their product much better than we do. Actually we are not good at marketing as we are into the pitch, where we keep being the best in the world as here in Brazil we don't need "to import" anybody from abroad in order to have high level competitions.
We could recently hear about a possible offer for you to take the reins of Saudi Arabia national team: is it something which could actually happen after the world cup? Regardless from this specific matter, would you think about working again outside Brazil, like you recently did (please tell us about your experience with Sharjah FC in the United Arab Emirates)?
Yes I got a proposal, but I was immediately clear in stating that right now my only goal is the national team of Brazil. I've read on some social networks people reporting as sure my future job in Saudi Arabia but this is not true at all, I've no agreement with anybody. I also got some other chances and offers but I would never leave my national team to get another job. if I had thought about what was best for me I probably would have already accepted some previous proposals but leading Brazil in a World Cup is not just my dream, it belongs to the whole country and this is what motivates me in my role.
I don't think about my continuity on the Brazilian bench, I'm in the most difficult cycle in the entire history of Brazil. I feel no vanity for my position, I just want to do the best for my country and if after the World Cup there's the chance to run other activities within Brazil I will evaluate it for sure. I don't just want to work to stack trophies. Otherwise I will get on with my life!
My journey in the United Arab Emirates was one of the greatest experiences in my professional career, working in a brand new team starting from zero, so that I had to be much more than a simple coach training in the pitch. This challenge made me completely abandon my comfort zone, I had to learn new methods, new things and especially a new culture. I made great friends there, I live intensely every personal and professional experience and I hope to return one day. People had a huge affection for me, coaches and athletes were kind and taught me many things. I keep Sharjah and UAE in my heart.
Come back to the past, I rembember about a young Marquinhos leading Futsal Marcianise in the Italian first division. Were you thinking, at that time, to develop your career until what you have then achieved? How do you evaluate your previous experience and when did you realize that futsal could actually turn into a profession? Is it right to state that your job in Marechal Rondon was a decisive step in your professional path?
I had a very important experience in Italy, but in the end I decided to leave the team as I could not get my job paid and due to the club management bad behaviour towards me. I always do my best in my job so I want the same treatment back. I've always looked for results but above winning titles I'm always passionate about the process and working on new things, using innovative methods and enjoy my teams playing great games. I work to play well and win, I think this happened in Marechal Rondon, we were delighted of playing against the biggest teams, beating them: that's the best taste. I learned from my past experiences and I'm sure I will live many more.

Futsal development: in my opinion we keep humming slogans on futsal in the Olympic Games (just to mention one, happening right now as the Tokyo challenge started, as per every time an event or discussion about the Olympic Games arises, with plenlty of people kindly explaining why we're not there!) without taking care of the real foundations of the game. Our development is not given by reaching the OG fixture, that would rather be a consequence of the game reinforcement. Clubs, players, coaches, federations, media: we all should work more rather than expecting other people to recognize our value. Do you agree? Also, why don't we believe in our idols and history, in the beauty and spectacle provided by our game? Why do we obsessively look for links with football (usual reports about soccer players who started their careers playing futsal are a sad and boring refrain)? Don't we believe in our chances? Do we need football or the Olympic Games to affirm our very existence? I don't think so!
I totally agree with you. I would adore enjoying our game in an Olympic programme but at the same time I'm aware we're quite bad outside the 40x20 pitch. We are very badly managed by the institutions which lead us, we are confused with football and we have nothing (or almost nothing) in common with it. Futsal's political and administrative lack of organization is what places our game where we are now. We don't care nor defend our history and idols. Regarding the issue of soccer players who played futsal I can give my opinion as I've studied this topic in my doctoral degree: there are many fake informations on this matter. Many anecdotal evidences prove that we don't actually get the respect we need from football. I know that futsal is medium contributor for football and I also know that football should pay for it. But we are not alone in this process, it is necessary to investigate a lot more and stop selling our game to football, getting nothing back.
England: the local FA has stopped all their futsal national teams activities as they need to focus on "winning major trophies" (namely football competitions). How this can happen in the year 2021? Does anybody care about futsal?
I don't know for sure what's happening there, but I have no doubts about one fact: they're collecting trophies in football! Futsal must be considered in its own, like an independent discipline. As I told before we should look at FUTSAL just like FUTSAL and not like a poor brother of soccer. We're under the same umbrella, but futsal people need to unite and demand the respect we deserve.
You are always clear and straightforward in your statements… what does our sport really need to take the step forward we all want? Do you believe in a future outside FIFA and its confederations?
I believe in a future for futsal to happen when all people having basic roles in our game will stop being afraid to say the truth (regarding our game development and reality), many of them just defend their job and wanna guarantee their salaries and roles. Some of them are vain and not really concerned with the sport and just when they leave their positions they begin criticizing of the institutions they have been part of during all their lives. But for me this is not right, it is necessary to speak while they are sitting at their posts, that is where we have visibility and we can give voice to our professionals.
Futsal is a self-sustainable sport, if we want we could not depend on anyone, but we need stronger and braver people who want to fight for their rights. I will do my part and continue to be straightforward, and fight for “my sport”.

Comecemos com o momento presente e do futuro próximo: o que você achou do sorteio do Mundial? Falando do grupo do Brasil, quais as dificuldades? Em geral, acha que existe um grupo mais complicado? O Brasil pode voltar ao topo do mundo?
Acredito que todos os grupos são equilibrados, o mundo do futsal mudou muito e todas as equipes já oferecem dificuldades para seus adversários. Mas, eu confio na nossa força e no desempenho da Seleção Brasileira, sei que teremos nossas dificuldades, mas vejo ser capaz de supera-las com o trabalho.
Com o mundial adiado em um ano, quais mudanças isto determinou na preparação da Seleção? Acha que foi algo negativo?
Para nossa Seleção foi negativo pois nesse tempo não tivemos mais nenhuma convocação, a última foi para um jogo isolado contra Espanha que nem treinar conseguimos. Então não tivemos a oportunidade de ver muitos jogadores que queríamos testar e dar mais tempo para outros.
Quanto é difícil, num país como Brasil que ainda é o maior formador do atletas de futsal, escolher 14/16 jogadores pra atuar na Seleção? E mais: o que acha de ser escolhido como treinador considerando os (muitos) grande técnicos no país?
Nossa geografia realmente é desafiadora, temos muitos jogadores surgindo e cada vez mais cedo eles estão indo embora para outros países, nos escapa pelos dedos a oportunidade de vê-los na Seleção Brasileira, teríamos que aumentar nossas possibilidades de convocação. Por fim, eleger 16 é uma tarefa complicada pois sabemos que poderíamos formar 2 ou até 3 grandes Seleções, porém cada treinador sempre apontará para a direção que melhor lhe convence e é isso que estou fazendo, ter os que melhor se adaptaram a estrutura de trabalho.
Quanto aos critérios que me fizeram chegar ao comando da Seleção posso dizer que foram técnicos, eu tenho um trabalho muito consolidado no meu país e apesar de uma carreira muito nova eu pude atuar em várias estruturas que me permitiram amadurecer muito cedo, temos grandes treinadores e estou apenas de passagem representando todos eles.
Sobre a mudança na gestão do futsal brasileiro, a CBF assumir o esporte e as seleções... sei que é complicado falar como treinador da Seleção principal do Brasil, mas o que você acha sobre esta mudança? De concreto, o que esta mudança pode determinar?
Eu acredito que as maiores mudanças deverão acontecer após o Mundial, não temos ainda o impacto disso. Poucas coisas foram modificadas com objetivo de não mudar a dinâmica de trabalho. O que posso dizer claramente é que o Brasil precisa definir suas posições internas, precisa melhorar na gestão e na organização da modalidade, as pessoas aqui precisam saber realmente o caminho que deverão seguir. Se estas coisas não mudarem poderemos continuar vencendo pois temos muita capacidade técnica, mas não mudaremos o cenário da organização. Eu tenho tentado contribuir para que não tenhamos somente títulos, mas que de verdade tratemos o Futsal Brasileiro como ele realmente merece.
O que você acha do fenômeno dos “oriundi” principalmente nas seleções da Europa? Não é um grande erro das federações, que assim matam a formação dos atletas locais pra chegar mais rapidamente aos resultados? Que sentido tem uma competição de seleções nacionais se muitos competem com o produto de um único país, Brasil? E, sempre conectado a este tema, parece-me incrível que, muitas vezes, um país que é o verdadeiro berço do futsal não seja reconhecido como tal (no que diz respeito ao campeonato, jogadores e técnicos). Talvez por que em outros países eles trabalhem melhor na "venda" do produto?
Eu não tenho dúvidas que esse tema é muito importante para o Futsal Mundial, eu vejo com certa tristeza muitas vezes países ignorarem seus próprios atletas para tentar vencer com atletas de outros países. Eu penso que isso não é producente. Sobre a questão da imagem, não me resta nenhuma dúvida de que alguns países “se vendem” muito melhor do que nós no Brasil, não somos bons de Marketing somos bons no trabalho de quadra, lá dentro seguimos sendo os Melhores do Mundo, pois aqui internamente não importamos ninguém para fazermos grandes competições.
Fala-se sobre uma proposta da Arábia Saudita pra treinar a seleção dela: algo que pode acontecer depois do mundial com o Brasil? Em geral, você considera a possibilidade de trabalhar outra vez fora do Brasil, como fez recentemente (conte-nos sobre sua experiência com o Sharjah FC nos Emirados Arabes Unidos)?
Eu recebi uma consulta, mas sempre deixei claro que neste momento meu foco total é a Seleção Brasileira. Eu vi que algumas redes sociais deram como certa a minha ida para a Arábia Saudita, mas isso não é verdade, eu não tenho nenhum acerto com ninguém, tive outras possibilidade, mas jamais deixaria minha Seleção para assumir outro compromisso. Se pensasse apenas no que é bom para mim talvez poderia ter aceitado os convites que tive, mas eu não estou indo para um Mundial apenas pelos meus sonhos, estou indo para tentar realizar o sonho de um País inteiro, isso é o que me move nesta função. Não penso em continuidade na Seleção Brasileira, estou no ciclo mais difícil de toda a história do Brasil, não tenho vaidade no cargo quero apenas fazer o melhor para meu país e se após a Copa do Mundo eu ter a chance de realizar outros trabalhos dentro da Seleção eu irei avaliar, não quero apenas trabalhar para empilhar troféus. Do contrário, seguirei minha vida!
A passagem pelos Emirados Arabes foi uma das maiores experiência da minha carreira profissional, uma equipe nova que iniciava do zero e por isso tive que ser muito mais que apenas um treinar de quadra.
O desafio me fez sair totalmente da minha zona de confronto, tive que aprender novos métodos, novas coisas e principalmente uma nova cultura. Fez grandes amigos, vivo intensamente a experiência pessoal e profissional e espero um dia voltar. As pessoas tiveram muito carinho comigo, treinadores e atletas foram gentis e me ensinaram muitas coisas. Tenho os Emirados Arabes no meu coração.

Tua trajetória passada no futsal... eu lembro de um jovem Marquinhos no Marcianise da Itália. Naquele momento, pensava em chegar onde agora está? Como vc considera as experiências do passado? Qual fui o momento onde vc percebeu que poderia ser e viver como profissional no futsal? Foi em Marechal Rondon o passo decisivo pra carreira?
Eu tive uma experiência muito importante na Itália, eu resolvi sair da equipe por não receber meus salários e porque as pessoas não foram legais comigo, eu dou o meu melhor sempre mas quero também ser tratado da mesma forma. Sempre busquei meus resultados, acima de ganhar títulos sempre fui apaixonado pelo processo, por trabalhar coisas novas, inovar nos métodos e ver minhas equipes realizarem grandes jogos, eu trabalho para jogar bem e vencer, acho que isso aconteceu em Marechal Rondon, tínhamos o prazer de jogar contra “os grandes” e de vencê-los, esse é o melhor sabor. Aprendi com as experiências e acredito que viverei muitas outras ainda.

Desenvolvimento do futsal: minha opinião é que continuamos lançando slogans do futsal olímpico sem nos preocupar em lançar as bases reais do nosso movimento. Nosso desenvolvimento não é dado pelo fato de chegarmos aos Jogos Olímpicos - isso deve ser consequência do fortalecimento do esporte. Clubes, treinadores, federações: em vez de pedir, devemos fazer mais. Você concorda? E tambem: por que o futsal não acredita no seus ídolos e na sua história, no show que pode garantir e, em vez disso, procura conexões com o futebol (quando se fala de futebolistas que começaram no futsal, etc, etc)? Não acreditamos em nossas possibilidades? Precisamos do futebol para afirmar nossa existência? Acho que não!
Concordo plenamente com você, eu adoraria ver o nosso esporte num programa olímpico, mas sou consciente de que somos muito ruins fora de quadra, somos muito mal geridos pelas instituições que nos comandam, somos confundidos com o futebol e nada (ou quase nada) temos dele. A desorganização política e administrativa do Futsal o coloca na posição que ele se encontra. Não cultivamos nossa história e tampouco nossos ídolos. Sobre a questão dos jogadores de futebol que jogaram futsal posso opinar porque estudo isso no Doutorado, existem muitas falácias sobre esse tema, existem muitas evidências anedóticas que fazem com que não tenhamos realmente o respeito que precisamos. Eu sei que o futsal é um meio contribuinte para o futebol, sei também que o futebol deveria pagar por isso. Mas não estamos sozinhos nesse processo, é preciso investigar muito mais e parar de se vender a troco de nada para o futebol.
Inglaterra: a federação local “mata” as seleções do futsal, porque dizem que tem que “procurar troféus mais importantes” (futebol). Como isso pode acontecer no 2021 sem ter uma reação? O futsal realmente interessa?
Eu não sei ao certo o que se passa por lá, mas de uma coisa eu tenho certeza...eles não estão encontrando troféus no futebol!!! O futsal deve ser pensado para sí, devemos olhar nossa modalidade como uma modalidade independente, como disse anteriormente é preciso pensar o Futsal como Futsal e não como o irmão pobre do futebol, estamos sob o mesmo guarda chuvas, mas precisamos nos unir e exigir o respeito que merecemos.
Você é sempre claro e direto em suas declarações… do que o nosso esporte realmente precisa para dar o passo pra frente que todos nós queremos? Acredita em um futuro fora da FIFA e suas confederações?
Eu acredito num futuro quando as pessoas que ocupam funções importantes no Futsal pararem de ter medo de dizer as coisas, muitos trabalham pelos seus empregos, querem garantir seus salários e suas funções. São vaidosos e não estão de fato preocupados com a modalidade. Quando saem de seus cargos começam a falar mal das instituições que fizeram parte a vida toda, mas para mim isso não tem legitimidade é preciso falar enquanto estão sentados em seus postos, é lá que temos visibilidade, damos voz aos nossos profissionais. O Futsal é uma modalidade autossustentável se quisermos não dependeremos de ninguém, porém precisamos de pessoas mais fortes e corajosas que queiram lutar pelos seus direitos. Farei a minha parte e continuarei sendo direto e lutando pelo “meu esporte”.
