FIFA announces Olympic calendar for futsal

27 Jul 2018

From October 7 - 18 futsal will make its first appearance in the history of the Olympic Movement. And it will take place at Buenos Aires 2018, the first edition of the Olympic Games with gender equality.

For the world of futsal, it will be a unique event that will put the discipline on the global sports stage. In the calendar organised by FIFA, there will be 48 games, 24 for both the men's and women's tournaments.

The tournament format will be as follows: the 10 teams that participate per gender will be divided in two zones of five teams each. They will play a round-robin format and the first two in each group will face off against each other to determine which National Olympic Committee representatives play for the gold medal and third-place.

Both championships will start on October 7, one day after the Buenos Aires 2018 opening ceremony at the city's Obelisk. The women's final will be on October 17 and the men's will be held on the last day of the Games on October 18.

The futsal stadium, located in Tecnopolis Park, will be the main site for Olympic futsal. Thirty-six matches will be played there, including the semifinals and the matches to determine the third-place winner at the Youth Olympic Games. The other venue is located in the CeNARD (Centre for High Performance Sport), a stadium within Green Park.

Up until now, in light of the Olympic qualifiers that have been played since last year, the eligible countries per gender for the Games are as follows: in the men's division Iran and Iraq (Asia), Egypt (Africa), Costa Rica and Panama (North and Central America/Caribbean), Soloman Islands (Oceania), and Italy and Russia (Europe). In the women's division the team candidates are Japan and Thailand (Asia), Nigeria (Africa), Trinidad and Tobago and the Dominican Republic (North and Central America/ Caribbean), Brazil and Colombia (South America), Tonga (Oceania) and Portugal and Spain (Europe).

The draw will be held on August 23 in the city of Buenos Aires. With the Argentine men's team as the only confirmed side to date, the futsal list for Buenos Aires 2018 will then be known in full detail.
