Quarter-final preview: Mes Sungun Varzaghan v FC EREM

Yogyakarta: Mes Sungun Varzaghan will be aiming to continue IR Iran’s proud record in the competition when they face FC EREM in the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship Indonesia 2018 on Wednesday.
Iranian clubs have regularly made the last four since 2010 and have produced three champions - Fooland Mahan (2010), Giti Pasand Isfahan (2012) and Tasisat Daryaei (2015).

Mes Sungun topped their group with a perfect record after defeating Lebanon's Bank of Beirut 3-1 on Monday but head coach Hamid Bigham Tabrizi is confident ahead of their clash against FC EREM.

“We are confident of taking on the Kyrgyz Republic team (FC Erem) as we know this team after analysing them and I think there won't be a bad day for us,” said Tabrizi.

Bolstered by stars Hossein Tayyebi, who is the tournament joint-top scorer with seven goals, and three-time AFC Player of the Year Ali Asghar Hassanzadeh, Mes Sungun are a formidable force in the tournament.

The Iranians have scored the most goals in the competition with 21 goals, level with defending champions Bluewave Chonburi of Thailand.

FC EREM finished second in their group after holding off a second half fightback from Australian side Vic Vipers to win the tie 4-2 on Monday.

Almost half the Kyrgyz Republic squad are FC Erem players and the team have surpassed all expectations by qualifying for the Knockout Stage.

Head coach Daniaar Abdraimov admits the match against Mes Sungun will be the toughest for EREM and stressed that his side have achieved their initial target.

"Our initial target was qualification from the group. We play Mes Sungun on Wednesday and the game against them will be like an exam for us,” said Abdraimov.

“It will be a difficult match. Most importantly, we achieved our minimum target, we qualified.

“Congratulations to my team, to its management who provided us with the opportunity to play in the tournament. Thank you Indonesia!"


Did you know?

The 2016 edition was the only time an Iranian club failed to reach the last four when Nagoya Oceans edged Tasisat Daryaei 3-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw.

FC EREM have achieved a milestone when the qualified for the quarter-finals. In 2017, FC EREM failed to make it past the group stage after settling for third.

Quarter-final preview: Bluewave Chonburi v Bank of Beirut

Yogyakarta: Defending champions Bluewave Chonburi will not underestimate Bank of Beirut when the two sides meet in the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship Indonesia 2018 on Wednesday.
Bluewave remain unbeaten in the competition and boast a prolific scoring record of 21 goals, equalling Islamic Republic of Iran’s Mes Sungun Varzaghan in the group stage.

Despite being powered by established players Kristada Wongkaeo, Suphawut Thueanklang and Jirawat Sornwichian, head coach Rakphol Sainetngamwas is aware of the dangers in facing a strong side like Beirut in the quarter-finals.

“Bank of Beirut are a very strong Lebanese team with strong foreign players. It will be a tough match, but my players are ready to face them,” said Sainetngamwas.

“I have fielded some younger players throughout the tournament. They have done well but can still improve. We know there is added pressure on us after winning last year’s tournament but we are on the right track and I feel our team is up for the challenge."

Bank of Beirut head coach Dejan Dedovic, however, is equally confident of beating Bluewave.

Beirut won their first two matches against Uzbekistan’s AGMK (4-1) and Tajikistan’s FC Sipar (11-2) but suffered a blip against Mes Sungun Varzaghan, losing 3-1 to finish second in the group.

The Lebanese club will pin their hopes on tournament joint-top scorer Mahdi Javid, who has scored seven goals, to better their best achievement in the Continental club competition when they reached the quarter-finals in 2015 and 2017.

“Lebanon have beaten them (Thailand) before in Chinese Taipei at the AFC Futsal Championship this year, so I don’t why we can’t repeat the feat here,” said Dedovic.

“We can’t simply say we are going to win but to be the best, you have to beat the champions.”


Did you know?

In head-to-head meetings, Bluewave Chonburi have beaten Bank of Beirut twice in 2017 and 2014.

Bluewave defeated Beirut 9-0 at Ho Chi Minh City last and 4-0 in Chengdu 2014 - both in the group stages.

Quarter-final preview: Nafit Al Wasat v Vamos FC

Yogyakarta: Head coach Haitham Abbas says Nafit Al Wasat will not be derailed by the expected partisan support for home side Vamos FC in their AFC Futsal Club Championship Indonesia 2018 quarter-final on Wednesday.
Nafit, the 2016 runners-up, opened their 2018 with a 1-1 draw against United Arab Emitares’ Al Dhafra but followed up with wins against Thai Son Nam (4-3) and Korea Republic’s Jeonju MAG (6-1) to top their group.

The Iraqi club have been impressive since making their debut in the competition three years ago and are dark horses to win the title this year.

Abbas' side will be up against Vamos, who have done well despite bringing in new players who lack international match experience.

“Two years ago we finished runners-up and last year we reached the quarter-finals. It won’t be easy against the home side (Vamos) but we will give it our best,” said Abbas.

Vamos FC created history on Sunday when they became the first Indonesian futsal team to qualify for the Knockout Stage of the Continental club competition and head coach Reza Falahzadeh has stressed that his players will push hard for the win on Wednesday.

“This is the first time an Indonesian futsal team advanced into the Knockout Stage of the competition and it is a great feeling.” said Falahzadeh.

“My players don't have much experience but in the next match we will try harder against our quarter-final opponents.”

Vamos captain Syahidansyah Lubis echoed Falahzadeh’s sentiments and said his team will give it their all in the last eight: “We have a young team with little experience but for sure we will fight till the end.”

Quarter-final Preview: Nagoya Oceans v Thai Son Nam

Yogyakarta: Head coach Pedro Costa believes Nagoya Oceans have what it takes to progress further in the competition when they face Vietnam powerhouse Thai Son Nam in the quarter-finals of the AFC Futsal Club Championship Indonesia 2018 on Wednesday.
At stake for Nagoya is another title to their trophy cabinet and a chance to redeem themselves after missing last year’s edition in Ho Chi Minh City.

Nagoya finished top of Group A with a 100 percent record and only conceded one goal in their 6-1 win against Dalian Yuan Dynasty from a penalty and Costa is looking forward to facing his former coach Miguel Rodrigo.

“Thai Son Nam are a very experienced team. They have finished third twice in the competition and are very tactical under Miguel (Rodrigo),” said the Portuguese.

“We have done our scouting for our next match and analysed how they played against Al Dhafra and we will be ready for them on Wednesday."

Shriker Osaka represented Japan last year after winning the F.League title but they fell to eventual champions Chonburi Bluewave 4-2 in the quarter-finals.

“We respect the other teams in the competition and our next goal is to reach the semi-finals.

Thai Son Nam finished third in 2015 and 2017, but had to dig deep in their final Group B match against Al Dhafra to pull off a 4-3 win against their Emirati opponents to qualify for the Knockout Stage.

Head coach Rodrigo is optimistic that his charges can put up a fight against the three-time champions in the last-eight.

“Nagoya are the former champions, they are an experienced Japanese side. They also have a strong team but we will put up a fight,” said Rodrigo.

“We are here now and we believe in ourselves. Thai Son Nam are in the quarter-finals and we are relaxed, so let’s play.”


Did you know?

The last time Nagoya faced Thai Son Nam was in the 2013 edition in Japan, with Nagoya winning 7-2, with coach Pedro Costa scoring a goal. Costa played under Miguel Rodrigo during the Spaniard's stint with the Japan national team from 2009 till 2016.
