After the past season play-off final lost by SL Benfica against archrivals Sporting CP it looked almost immediately clear that the Joel Rocha seven years journey on the águias bench was about to end. Who to replace him? After several weeks of speculations the name left on the paper was just one José María Pazos Méndez, in futsal commonly known as Pulpis. Maybe not the expected one, for the simple reason that until few weeks ago he was leading Thailand towards an imminent World Cup. But things change fast and recently the SL Benfica management has officially announced his appointment as head coach. So we took the chance to talk to Pulpis about his future ambitions in Portugal and the "Thai feeling" after leaving his "second country" just before Lithuania 2021.

SL Benfica just announced your appointment as new head coach, replacing Joel Rocha. This means a further step in your coaching career: how do you rate it?

Well, the truth is that after so many years spent in Asia I needed a change, new challenges. Since some time I experienced some troubles in Thailand, so that actually Benfica's option appeared at a perfect time for me. It's a very big challenge and at the same time a privilege that a club as strong and prestigious as Benfica relied on me, and now it's just a matter of working hard to to repay this trust.


What's your opinion regarding the Portuguese league? In the last years seemed to be a 1vs1 challenge between Lisbon derby giants. Do you believe the story will be the same for next season or maybe a club like Braga and their recent transfers can change the usual movie script?

I guess that probably from outside it may seem a bit like that, a league for two clubs only. But if we look more carefully and follow the Portuguese league we will see that it is not just like that. And not only because of Braga but also due to clubs that are always there such as Fundao, Modicus, Leoes Porto Salvo, Quinta Dos Lombos among others. I believe that every year the Liga Placard continues to rise in level and you only have to analyze the signing of the different teams this season to find out that they are becoming more and more professional.


What kind of Benfica should we expect regarding the roster? Club management has currently announced Romulo's arrival from KPRF and both Fabio Cecilio and Tiago Brito departures. Then it was time to sign Bruno Cintra from Braga. Also, since a while Benfica signed two of the most interesting young profiles of national futsal like Caxinas's couple Carlinhos (Carlos Monteiro) and Lucio Rocha (the last one should be playing on loan in Caxinas also for the next season).

Basically we're going to rely on our current roster with just small adjustments trying to balance two important departures such as the likes of Fabio Cecilio and Tiago Brito and the "cierre" position where we definitely needed a player with Romulo's profile.

Carlinhos is a player with impressive skills: not a player for the future, he's basic right now. Lucio Rocha is another player who will be an important piece of Benfica roster, although as you mentioned in this season he will remain on loan at Caxinas as he must complete his studies first, since he's only 17.

Bruno Cintra has a lot of experience who will give provide us with speed and great skills in the 1vs1 and Romulo does not need any introductions: after some fantastic years in Russia now he comes to Lisbon not only to be an important player in defense but also attacking, and he will give us a lot of balance.


As obvious you started as a club coach in Spain but that was followed by a long experience in Asia as national team head coach of Thailand and Uzbekistan (A and U20), though also coaching the most important local clubs of both countries like Chonburi and Ardus. So, for coaching starting their journey: which are the greatest differences between both roles (club/national team coach)? Is it just a mere matter of coaching all days in a club and just in some periods through training stages with the national teams? Or there's more than this? And if you were forced to choose what your best option would be?

There's actually a quite big difference. In a club you experience a daily work, it's easier to put your stamp on the team because you train every day, in the same time it's harder cause your work is evaluated every week-end. In a national team you have very little time to work, so achieving what you want is more difficult. As a coach you learn to synthesize, to be pragmatic, you need to make the most from the little time available for your job and this also affects you in the players selection. You learn to often call not on the best but on those who will best adapt to the game model in a short time. I personally like working in a club, I enjoy more the daily work and that's exactly what I missed and what led me to accept this challenge with Benfica.


One last question: what's the feeling while abandoning the chance to lead a country like Thailand in a World Cup and, on a general note, to leave a country where you've lived for such a long time?

Well, that was really a difficult and complicated decision. Giving up my third World Cup has not been easy. My idea was to leave Thailand after the World Cup, because I considered that my cycle there was over and I was also excited to end this journey with the players generation I started working with in 2009-2010, but unfortunately in the last year and a half happened some things which I didn't like, above all since January of this year. When we ended our qualifiers tournament in Dubai I expressed my thoughts about that situation to the Thai FA and still nothing changed. I have lived in Thailand for 10 years, it is my second home and I have left many friends and memories there, it has not been the way I had imagined to say goodbye and close this experience, but sometimes things just don't work out the way you want them to.

El SL Benfica acaba de anunciar su fichaje como nuevo técnico del equipo, en sustitución de Joel Rocha. Esto significa un paso más en tu carrera como entrenador: ¿cómo lo calificas?

Si la verdad es que después de muchos años en Asia necesitaba un cambio, nuevos retos. Desde hacia tiempo tenia algunos problemas en Tailandia y la verdad la opción del Benfica apareció en el momento perfecto. Es un reto muy grande y a la vez un privilegio que un club tan fuerte e importante como Benfica se haya fijado en mi y ahora solo queda trabajar para tratar de devolver esa confianza.


¿Cuál es su opinión sobre la liga portuguesa? En los últimos años ha sido un desafío 1vs1 entre los gigantes del derbi de Lisboa. ¿Crees que la historia será la misma para la próxima temporada o tal vez un club como Braga y sus recientes fichajes puedan cambiar el guión habitual de la película?

Bueno yo creo que desde fuera puede parecer un poco eso, que es una liga de dos pero si profundizas y sigues la liga portuguesa veras que no es asi, no solo por el Braga sino otros equipos que están siempre ahí como Fundao ,Modicus , Leoes de Porto Salvo , Quinta Dos Lombos entre otros .Creo que cada año la Liga Placard sigue subiendo de nivel y solo tienes que analizar las incorporaciones de los diferentes equipos esta temporada y que cada vez son mas profesionales .


¿Qué Benfica serà con respecto a la plantilla? De momento la dirección del club ha anunciado la llegada de Romulo procedente de KPRF y las salidas de Fabio Cecilio y Tiago Brito. Luego fue confirmado el fichaje de Bruno Cintra del Braga. Además, desde hace tiempo el Benfica tiene fichados a dos de los perfiles jóvenes más interesantes del fútbol sala nacional como son la pareja de Caxinas Carlinhos (Carlos Monteiro) y Lucio Rocha (el último debería estar jugando en préstamo en Caxinas también para la próxima temporada).


Vamos a mantener la confianza en la plantilla que tenemos con pequeños retoques tratando de equilibrar dos salidas tan importantes como de la de Fabio Cecilio y Tiago Brito y una posición como la de cierre en donde hacia falta algún jugador con el perfil de Romulo. Carlinhos es un jugador con unas condiciones impresionantes y no es un jugador de futuro sino de presente. Lucio Rocha es otro jugador que será parte importante del Benfica aunque este año permanecerá cedido como tu dices en el Caixinhas , porque debe finalizar primero los estudios , ya que solo tiene 17 años . Bruno Cintra es un jugador con mucha experiencia que nos va a aportar velocidad y desborde en el 1 vs 1 y Romulo no necesita presentación, después de unos años fantásticos en Rusia ahora viene a Lisboa no solo a ser un jugador importante en defensa sino también en ataque y nos va a dar mucho equilibrio.


Como es obvio empezaste como entrenador de clubes en España, pero a eso le siguió una larga experiencia en Asia como seleccionador de Tailandia y Uzbekistán (A y U20) (aunque tambien entrenando en este mismo periodo los clubes más importantes de ambos países como Chonburi y Ardus). Dos preguntas que pueden interesar los que empezan su actividad como entrenadores: ¿cuáles son las mayores diferencias entre ambos roles (entrenador de club / selección nacional)? ¿Es solo una cuestión de entrenar todos los días en un club y solo en algunos períodos a través de stages con las selecciones nacionales? ¿O hay más que esto? ¿Y si tuvieras que elegir cuál sería tu mejor opción?

La verdad es que varia bastante. En un club tienes mas el día a día, es mas fácil poner tu sello porque entrenas prácticamente a diario, también es cierto que eres puesto a prueba cada fin de semana. En una selección tienes muy poco tiempo para trabajar, con lo cual conseguir con lo que quieres es mas difícil. Como seleccionador aprendes a sintetizar, a concretar, tienes poco tiempo y debes exprimirlo al máximo,y eso también te condiciona a la hora de seleccionar a los jugadores . Aprendes a seleccionar muchas veces no a los mejores sino a los que mejor se van a adaptar en poco tiempo al modelo de juego. A mi personalmente me gusta trabajar en un club, me gusta mas el dia a dia y precisamente es lo que echaba de menos y me llevo a aceptar este reto.


Una última pregunta: ¿qué se siente al abandonar la oportunidad de liderar a un país como Tailandia en una Copa del Mundo y, en general, dejar un país en el que viviste durante tanto tiempo?

Bueno ha sido una decisión muy difícil , muy complicada . Renunciar a mi tercera Copa del Mundo no ha sido fácil . Mi idea era dejar Tailandia después la Copa del Mundo , porque consideraba que mi ciclo allí había terminado y me hacia ilusión además hacerlo con la generación con la que empece a trabajar en 2009-2010 , pero en el ultimo año y medio han sucedido cosas que no me gustaban y sobre todo desde Enero de este año . Cuando terminamos el clasificatorio en Dubai comente a la federación lo que pensaba y aun asi nada cambio . He vivido 10 años en Tailandia , es mi segunda casa y he dejado muchos amigos y recuerdos allí , no ha sido la manera que había imaginado para despedirme y cerrar el ciclo pero las cosas a veces no son como uno quiere.
